Climate variations and change can affect global and regional atmospheric and oceanic circulations. Significant variations and change, where the system deviates dramatically from the mean state of the climate, are correlated to extreme weather and climate events on various time scales including, daily, monthly, seasonal and annual time scales. Such events can lead directly or indirectly to negative consequences on lives, goods, properties, and the well being of societies.
There is a general consensus within the climate community that any change in the frequency or severity of extreme climate events would have profound impacts on nature and society. It is thus very important to monitor extreme events.
